The pitch is seductive: replace your boring old keyboard with one that has GPT-5.2 or Claude Opus 4.5 baked in. Get grammar correction, tone adjustment, translation, and AI suggestions without leaving the keyboard. No app switching. No copy-paste.
And honestly? For pure text correction, they’re great. If you want to fix a typo, rephrase a sentence, or translate something, an AI keyboard works fine. The keyboard sees your text and improves it.
But the moment you need context — the moment you need the AI to understand what you’re responding to — the keyboard hits a wall. A hard wall. Because keyboards are sandboxed. Android’s input method framework gives them access to the text field and… that’s it. No screen content. No conversation history. No article context. No product page. Just the blinking cursor and whatever you’ve typed into it.
What an AI Overlay Does Differently
